4E Donates Personal Protective Equipment to Kaiser Permanente to Fight COVID-19

April 22, 2020

Coronavirus has upended life as we know it, and people across the globe are struggling to adapt to new social paradigms of distancing and isolation. Healthcare workers aren’t afforded the ability to maintain a 6-foot distance from their patients, and they heroically put themselves in harm’s way without adequate personal protective equipment (PPE). 4Excelsior is dedicated to supporting healthcare workers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are donating masks, respirators, gloves, and gowns to hospitals across the globe.

The virus that is responsible for the pandemic is called SARS-CoV-2, and the illness it causes is called coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19. Between December 2019 and April 2020, more than 1.5 million cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed across the globe, with nearly 100,000 deaths. So far, studies show that SARS-CoV-2 is more transmissible and more lethal than influenza.

Scientists use something called R0 (pronounced R naught) to measure how infectious a particular pathogen is. An R0 of 1 means that every sick person will pass the pathogen on to 1 other person. The flu virus has an R0 of 1.3. Although scientists are still trying to understand exactly how transmissible SARS-CoV-2 is, a recent report published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that the median R0 is 5.7, with a range of 3.8 to 8.9 [1]. In other words, people with the flu will infect 1 or 2 other people, and people with the coronavirus will infect about 6 other people.

Flu is one of the more dangerous viruses that we encounter routinely, and it has a fatality rate of around 0.1%, meaning that 1 out of every 1,000 people who get the flu will die. So far, the fatality rate of COVID-19 has conservatively been estimated to at least 1.4%, which makes it more than ten times deadlier than the flu virus.

These alarming numbers highlight how important it is that our healthcare workers have reliable access to PPE, and 4Excelsior is stepping in to do its part to make sure they can do their jobs safely. We believe it’s our duty to provide help and aid wherever we can. With that in mind, 4Excelsior has developed relationships with Kaiser Permanente (Riverside, CA), Yiyu Polyclinic (Guangxi, China), and Wuhan No.9 Hospital (Hubei, Wuhan and Qingshan, China), where we are donating PPE to help them fight coronavirus. We are currently establishing relationships local food banks, where we will be donating vegan protein to aid people who are struggling to access healthy food during the pandemic.

4Excelsior is an industry leader in research, development, and manufacturing in the pharmaceutical industry, and we take our mission to improve the health and wellbeing of our global community very seriously. We began donating supplies to Chinese hospitals that had been overwhelmed by COVID-19 before the first case was diagnosed in the United States, and we continue to deliver much needed supplies to hospitals in China, as well as providing masks, respirators, and other protective equipment to healthcare workers in US hospitals.

During these unprecedented times, it’s more important than ever that we work together to take care of each other. No one is more invested in this fundamental truth than healthcare workers, and 4Excelsior would like to take this opportunity to thank the millions of doctors, nurses, first responders, and other medical professionals across the globe who selflessly put themselves in harms way to help others.
